Solo Female Van Life: Safety Tips & Community

Updated · By the Vanlifer team · 2 min read

Short answer: Many women travel solo in vans, and most say the biggest risks are the same as for anyone: choosing a poor spot, driving tired, or the van breaking down. Choose spots with recent good reviews, arrive before dark, keep the driver's seat clear so you can leave quickly, share your location with someone you trust, and connect with other women on the road.

Choosing a spot

  • Prefer spots with recent positive reviews, ideally from other women.
  • Arrive in daylight so you can see the exits and who is around.
  • Aires and small campsites with other vans are a good default for the first nights in a new region.
  • Trust your instinct. If a place feels wrong, drive on, even at night.

Night routine

  • Park facing the exit, keys in the same place every night, driver's seat clear.
  • Close blackout curtains, and keep cooking and lights discreet in urban spots.
  • Keep your phone charged and a power bank by the bed.
  • Keep the local emergency number handy (112 works across the EU).

Van security

  • Extra locks (deadlocks or cab locks), a steering-wheel lock, and window film or covers.
  • A simple door alarm or motion-sensor light.
  • Don't advertise that you're alone: two mugs on the dashboard, a man's boots by the door. Small things many women use.

Sharing your location safely

Share your exact live location only with people you trust, through your phone's location sharing. On public apps, share only an approximate area. Vanlifer's live map shows approximate positions, and you can control what you share.

Finding other women on the road

Use the female vanlifers filter on Vanlifer to find women travelling nearby, join women-only meetups, and use the community chat. Many solo women say convoying for a few days with other vans is the best way to settle into a new country.
