Can you sleep in a van in Germany?
- The one-night stay is a long-standing tolerance, not a written right. Signs and local rules take priority.
- Indicative fines vary by state: about €10–200 for unauthorised camping; much higher in landscape and nature reserves (up to roughly €1,500–2,500).
A dense network of Stellplätze (free to about €20–25 a night), campsites, and farm and winery stays through networks such as Landvergnügen.
Local names: Wohnmobilstellplatz (Stellplatz), Campingplatz, Landvergnügen (farm stays)
- A green Umweltplakette (emissions sticker) is needed to enter Umweltzonen, including for foreign vehicles; the fine is €100. Some cities have dropped their zones and others have tightened them, so check before you go.
- No motorway toll for vehicles under 3.5 t.
Checked October 2026. Fines and prices are indicative, and local signs always take priority. Sources: Bußgeldkatalog: overnight stays in a motorhome · ERGO Rechtsportal: Umweltplakette
