Freedom Camping in New Zealand: The 2026 Rules

Updated · By the Vanlifer team · 2 min read

Short answer: Freedom camping is allowed on much public land in New Zealand unless a council bylaw, DOC or LINZ rule prohibits it, but on most public land it is limited to certified self-contained vehicles. Since 7 June 2026 only the new green self-containment warrant is valid; the old blue warrant is no longer recognised.

What changed

The Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act 2023 replaced the old voluntary blue self-containment warrant with a regulated green warrant, issued by certified authorities under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. After an extended transition for private vehicles, blue warrants stopped being recognised on 7 June 2026.

The rules in New Zealand

  • Self-contained certification (fixed toilet, fresh and waste water, sink, rubbish storage, ventilation) is valid for 4 years.
  • Infringement fine for freedom camping on public land without a valid warrant: NZ$400.
  • Popular towns such as Queenstown and Wanaka have strict bylaws.

Where to stay legally in New Zealand

DOC campsites (from free basic sites to serviced ones), holiday parks, council freedom-camping areas and NZMCA member parks.

Local names: freedom camping, DOC campsite, holiday park, NZMCA park.

Practical tips for New Zealand
