How Vanlifers Find Water, Showers & Dump Points

Updated · By the Vanlifer team · 2 min read

Short answer: Most vanlifers fill up water and empty grey water and toilet cassettes at motorhome service points (at aires, camper stops, campsites and some fuel stations), shower at campsites, gyms, swimming pools, truck stops or beaches, and use laundrettes for washing. A community map with water, dump and laundry filters is the fastest way to find them.

Drinking water

  • Service points at aires and camper stops (often coin- or token-operated, many free).
  • Campsites, sometimes even if you are not staying, for a small fee.
  • Fuel stations, cemeteries and public fountains: common in southern Europe, but always ask, and check the water is marked drinkable (eau potable, agua potable, Trinkwasser).
  • Carry a short hose and a few tap adapters (a universal tap connector solves most cases), and treat or filter water when you are unsure of the source.

Emptying grey water and the toilet cassette

Grey water (sink and shower) and black water (toilet) must only be emptied at a proper service point / dump station. Emptying them on the ground or into street drains is illegal in most countries. It is also the fastest way to get vans banned from a place.

  • Look for the motorhome service symbol (often branded Euro-Relais, Aire Services, Flot Bleu or Raclet in France).
  • Many campsites let passing vans use their disposal point for a fee.
  • Composting toilets avoid cassette dumps but still need proper disposal of the solids and liquids.

Showers

  • Campsites (some sell shower-only tokens)
  • Public swimming pools and leisure centres
  • Gym chains with multi-location memberships
  • Truck stops and motorway service areas (paid showers are common in Europe)
  • Beach showers (rinse only, no soap)
  • Your own: a solar shower bag or a small 12V pump shower

Toilets

A cassette toilet or composting toilet makes van life much easier, especially in towns. Otherwise use public toilets, cafés and fuel stations. In the wild, follow leave-no-trace rules: dig a cat hole well away from water and pack out toilet paper.

Laundry

Laundrettes are everywhere in Europe, and many supermarket car parks in France, Spain and Portugal have outdoor self-service laundry machines. Many campsites have washing machines too.

Find them on the map

On the Vanlifer map, filter by Drinking water, Waste / dump, Service point or Laundry, or open any aire to see which services it lists (drinking water, grey water, WC dump, electricity, showers, Wi-Fi). If you use a service point that isn't on the map, add it: that's the most useful pin you can drop.

Frequently asked questions

At campsites, gyms, public swimming pools, truck stops and motorway services, or with their own solar or 12V shower. Many vans have no shower at all and rely on these.

At a motorhome service point or dump station (at aires, camper stops, campsites and some fuel stations), or in a normal toilet where this is allowed. Never on the ground or in a storm drain.

Many aires and camper stops have free or cheap water. Some fuel stations and public taps allow it if you ask. Use the drinking-water filter on a community map to find nearby points.

In most countries, no: it counts as pollution and can be fined. Use a service point.
