Can you sleep in a van in Italy?

Under Article 185 of Italy's Highway Code, a motorhome parked where parking is allowed is not camping if it rests only on its wheels, emits nothing but engine exhaust and takes no more space than its footprint. Stabilisers, awnings or chairs make it camping, which towns can ban by ordinance.
The rules
  • Italian courts have repeatedly struck down blanket bans on motorhome parking, but local "divieto di campeggio" (no camping) signs are common, and strict in protected areas and many coastal and alpine resorts.
  • Dumping grey or black water outside proper facilities: indicative fine €87–344.
  • Paid car parks may charge motorhomes up to 50% more than cars.

Good to know
  • Never drive into a ZTL (limited traffic zone) in historic centres: cameras enforce it and fines arrive by post, even abroad.
  • Milan and some other cities add environmental access zones (e.g. Area B/C).
