Can you sleep in a van in Sweden?
- The off-road driving law bans driving on almost all natural land, and a landowner cannot authorise it.
- Municipalities can set local motorhome rules. Ask the landowner before staying near homes.
- Fines: not confirmed from an official source, so they vary.
Ställplatser, campsites (many require a Camping Key Europe card), and marinas and farms that accept motorhomes.
Local names: ställplats (motorhome stopover), camping, tömningsstation (dump point)
- Congestion charges in Stockholm and Gothenburg also apply to foreign vehicles (billed via Epass24).
- Empty waste only at a tömningsstation.

Vanlife in Sweden
Vanlifer is building its Sweden community right now. Browsing the map, adding spots and meeting other vanlifers is completely free — no membership fee, no booking fee — so the first vanlifers in Sweden tend to get the most messages and meet-ups once travellers arrive.
Every spot carries community photos and reviews so you know what to expect before you arrive — access, surface, noise, services and how recently someone stayed. Tap a spot, read the latest reviews, and drive over. Found a good one yourself? Drop a pin to help the next van.
Spots come in every flavour across Sweden: park & sleep, motorhome aires, water & service points, wild camping and campsites — filter the map by what you need.
