Can you sleep in a van in Norway?

Norway's right to roam (allemannsretten) covers people on foot and tents, not motor vehicles. Sleeping in a motorhome is generally accepted where parking is legal and not signed otherwise, at least 150 m from houses and cabins and never on farmland or by driving off-road.
The rules
  • Local bans are increasing: parts of Lofoten restrict overnight parking, and popular trailhead car parks such as Preikestolen and Geiranger are reported to ban overnight stays.
  • Do not stay in passing places or lay-bys marked for other uses; keep about 4 m between vehicles for fire safety.
  • Fines: not confirmed from an official source, so they vary.
Where to stay legally

Campsites (roughly NOK 350–550 a night) and bobilparkering motorhome parking (roughly NOK 100–250), both indicative.

Local names: bobilparkering / bobilplass (motorhome parking), campingplass

Good to know
  • Fires are banned in and near forests from 15 April to 15 September.
  • Tolls are fully electronic (AutoPASS): register a foreign vehicle with Epass24. Ferry prices depend on vehicle length (6 m threshold).

Checked October 2026. Fines and prices are indicative, and local signs always take priority. Read the full Norway guide → Sources: Fjord Norway: advice for camping in Norway · camping.no
