Can you sleep in a van in United Kingdom?
- England & Wales: camping on land without the landowner's permission is trespass (usually a civil matter); councils restrict overnight parking with Traffic Regulation Orders and Public Spaces Protection Orders.
- Dartmoor: in May 2025 the Supreme Court confirmed backpack wild camping on Dartmoor Commons is legal. That does not cover vehicles.
- Scotland: roadside overnight stays in vehicles are widely tolerated but not a right. Never use passing places, and never drive off-road.
- Loch Lomond & The Trossachs: from March to September, motorhomes in the Camping Management Zones need a campsite or a permit (£4.30 per vehicle per night).
Campsites, small members-only five-van sites (CL/CS, roughly £10–25 a night), pub and farm stopovers, and council motorhome bays.
Local names: campsite, CL/CS (small certificated sites), motorhome stopover, pub & farm stops
- London's ULEZ and Clean Air Zones in cities such as Birmingham, Bristol and Bath charge non-compliant vehicles. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee have Low Emission Zones.
- Edinburgh's 5% visitor levy applies to paid stays, including campsite pitches, from 24 July 2026.
Checked October 2026. Fines and prices are indicative, and local signs always take priority. Read the full United Kingdom guide → Sources: BMC: Supreme Court rules wild camping on Dartmoor is legal · Loch Lomond & The Trossachs: camping byelaws · Highland Council: motorhome guidance (PDF)
