Free iOverlander Alternatives (2026)

What changed with iOverlander 2
iOverlander is a long-running community database of places to sleep, water, fuel, mechanics and border crossings, built by overlanders. Version 2 introduced in-app purchases. According to the App Store listing, finding places, adding places, reviews, favourites and sharing remain available. The paid tiers add downloadable maps and viewing points without signal. Some reviewers report other limits in the free version, so check the current app terms yourself.
The alternatives
| App | Strength | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Vanlifer | Free community spot map plus a live map of vanlifers, feed and meetups; every spot has a public web page | Free, with no paid tier |
| park4night | Huge European database | Free basic version; park4night+ €9.99/year |
| Campendium / The Dyrt / FreeRoam | US campgrounds and public-land camping | Free versions with paid upgrades |
| Organic Maps / OsmAnd | Offline maps from OpenStreetMap. Not spot communities, but great for navigating offline | Free (OsmAnd has paid extras) |
Tips for going (mostly) offline for free
- Before you lose signal, save tonight's and tomorrow's candidate spots in your spot app.
- Download the region in a free offline map app.
- Screenshot the spot page (photos, access notes, services).
- Back on signal, add a review so the next traveller has fresh information.
Is Vanlifer a full iOverlander replacement?
Not yet everywhere. iOverlander has many years of places across the Americas, Africa and Asia. Vanlifer is newer and grows wherever members pin spots. It already gives you a completely free map, reviews, chat and people nearby, so it works well as a free second app. Every spot you add improves it.
