Can you sleep in a van in United States?

Free dispersed camping ("boondocking") is generally legal on Bureau of Land Management land and in national forests unless an area is posted closed: on BLM land for up to 14 days in a 28-day period, then move at least 25 miles. Sleeping in vehicles in cities is regulated locally and varies widely.
The rules
  • National forests: often 14 days in a 30-day period, but this varies by forest. Use Motor Vehicle Use Maps and stay on designated routes.
  • Typical Forest Service guidance: camp near the road on existing sites, at least 100 ft from water, pack out trash and check fire restrictions.
  • Since the 2024 Supreme Court decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, many cities enforce bans on camping and sleeping in vehicles.
Where to stay legally

BLM and national forest dispersed sites (free), developed campgrounds (roughly $10–40+), RV parks, and businesses that allow overnight parking (ask the manager).

Local names: dispersed camping / boondocking, BLM land, national forest, campground

Good to know
  • From 1 January 2026 the America the Beautiful pass costs $250 for non-residents, who otherwise pay a $100 surcharge per person at 11 of the busiest national parks.

Checked October 2026. Fines and prices are indicative, and local signs always take priority. Sources: BLM: camping on public lands · USFS: dispersed camping guidelines (example forest) · Visit Utah: national park fee changes 2026
